Okay. This was a pretty good day. I talked before about
Drake releasing some music the morning after the J. Cole concert in NYC, but I
think it’s a good time to talk a bit more about it. So, in true Drizzy style,
the MC thought he’d just drop 4 songs out of the blue at like 5AM. The thing is
that I was in NY at the time, which means I was still sleeping. However, all my
friends back home already knew about this so my phone was getting hit up hard.
I mean, I must of had like 20-30 messages when I woke up. So yeah, before I
even got up I was on this lovely new OVO website to listen to this cluster of
music. I’m not saying any of them were bad, but there really is an order to
them, and one motherfucker was all the summer could think about.
4. PND (Ft. Drake) – Over Here. This was a little single off
the upcoming mixtape by PND, PARTNEXTDOOR. The song is nice. It is clean and
smooth. Something that everyone is going to like and is easy on the ears. PartyNextDoor
himself lays down vocals which pretty much make up the song. But then Drake
spits a clear verse giving us a bit more to his story. But all in all. It was
good.
3. Drake(Ft. Sampha) – The Motion. Now I guess this one
could be argued. You might think that this should be 2nd instead. It
was a classic Drake song with him rapping for the most part, but his melody was
just too much to contain. It’s another calm beat with a rather brash verse from
Drizzy. Starting with “I don’t have a
fuck to give” kin
1. Migos (Ft. Drake) – Versace (Remix). You guys new this
was coming. This is the motherfucker. Come on. This was undoubtedly the song of
the summer. There wasn’t a single place you were going which didn’t have “Versace Versace Versace Versace Versace
Versace!” screaming from the speakers. Let’s not forget that before Drake
out his verse on this track, all of about seven people had heard it. So Drake
did his thing, and the world was introduced to Migos (which is a trio, if you
didn’t know.)
Drake shook the hip hop world with these 4 tracks. He
totally shut every artist down. No one was listening to anyone else. No one cared
about MCHG, Yeezus or Born Sinner. Everyone was bumpin’ Drake. Obviously it was
fairly short lived. But the moment will be remembered for years to come. Drake
really showed his dominance in the game with this move. It was risky, it doesn’t
happen very often. He could have released them songs over a couple months, but
he made his play and it paid off.
